HOW I’VE GROWN
- I am much more comfortable working under the pressure of a deadline
- I have a better understanding of how to conduct an interview
- I have worked on my relationship-building skills, which is especially important when covering athletes for multiple months
- My writing has improved tremendously, and I now know how to quickly turn around a clean story that covers all aspects of a game
- I’ve learned how much preparation and research is needed in order to be successful, not just in my field of work but in life as a whole
WORK SAMPLES
- The above two items link to a game story I wrote late in the season and a postgame interview that was uploaded to Twitter.
- For the article:
- I felt it was one of my strongest recaps
- I started with a clear, concise lede that succinctly captured the feel of a playoff game
- While the rest of the article mostly detailed the scoring plays, I expounded upon certain moments to make the reader feel like they were there witnessing a tense, back-and-forth contest
- I wrote the article under intense pressure, as I was assisting with scorekeeping while writing, and I had to maintain a deadline
- Though I was unable to secure interviews after the game, the article reads cleanly and needed little editing
- The article also signaled a critical moment in the team’s history, as they returned to the championship series for the first time in 13 years
- For the interview:
- By this point in the season, I had honed my interview skills
- I felt that I asked particularly sharp, pointed questions that dug into Gallo’s performance and the team’s mindset
- I maintained a conversational tone that helped Gallo feel at ease when talking
- It did help that I had gotten to know him pretty well over the course of the summer. Once again, relationship building is extremely important
- I did not have a lot of time to conduct the interview (hence its short length), so I needed to be particularly terse with my questions
- As the interview was posted to Twitter, I think it gives a good glimpse into how I ran the team’s social media during the season
